Roots is the starting point of The Reading Seed program and is ideal for preschool or early kindergarten learners who are just beginning to explore letters and sounds.
Children in this level are learning foundational skills such as recognizing letter sounds and blending simple sounds together.
Your child may be a good fit for Roots if they:
are learning letter sounds (for example, knowing that B says /b/)
enjoy singing the alphabet or practicing letters
can hear beginning sounds in words (like knowing cat starts with C)
are just starting to try sounding out simple words
are not yet confidently reading words on their own
This stage focuses on building strong reading “roots” that support all future reading skills!
Typically Ages 3-6
Level 1 - Roots
Sprouts is designed for learners who know many letter sounds and are beginning to read simple words.

know most letter sounds
can sound out simple words like cat, dog, sun, maprecognize some common sight words like the, and, is, my
are beginning to read very short sentences with help
enjoy trying to read simple beginner books!
At this stage, reading skills begin to grow, just like sprouts growing from strong roots!
Typically Ages 5-7
Level 2 - Sprouts
The Flowers group is designed for learners who are beginning to read more independently and want to strengthen their confidence and fluency.
Children at this level continue practicing reading while also developing stronger comprehension and understanding of what they are reading.
Your child may be a good fit for Flowers if they:
can read simple sentences such as “The cat is on the mat.”
are beginning to read beginner books on their own
recognize many common sight words
are working on reading more smoothly and confidently
can talk about what happened in a short story
This stage helps young readers grow into confident and capable readers,
just like a plant that has fully grown and is beginning to flower!
Typically Ages 6-8
